Start with the moment

A useful AI feature begins with a moment in someone’s work. Perhaps they have an idea but no structure, a long document but no overview, or a draft that needs a new angle. Describe that moment before deciding where a new button should go.

Make the first action easy to understand

Explain what the feature can help with and what information it needs. A focused example can be more useful than a long list of possibilities. The person should know what will happen after they click and which parts of the result they will be able to change.

Design the in-between states

Waiting is part of the experience. So are an empty result, unavailable service, and a request that needs clarification. Use plain language, keep the original input accessible, and give the person a practical next action. A polished first screen cannot compensate for a confusing recovery path.

Leave room for judgment

Present generated material as something the user can work with. Make refinement, dismissal, and comparison feel natural. The best handoff is one that helps a person understand the result and decide what to do with it.

Put the idea into practice.
